Backup Contacts using MPT
This page contains info on Backing up your Phonebook/Contacts from one Phone,
and Restoring to another using Motorola Phone Tools (aka MPT, formerly Mobile
Phone Tools).
This process can also be used to backup/restore the
Phonebook to the same phone, or Different Moto phone.
This applies to the V710, E815, V3C and V3M... I have NOT tested this with K1M, L7C or Maxx Ve, but it may still work with those phones.
It is suggested that after you do a backup, you find the Contacts.CSV and
copy it to a SAFE PLACE just in case, as it appears that when "switching profiles" in MPT
v4.0B the backup file (contacts.csv) dissappears!!! However, other versions it appears to be retained.
Required...
1. USB Cable (see the FAQ) Or Bluetooth equipped PC.
2. Install the Motorola USB Modem drivers or
PC Bluetooth Drivers.
3. Install/configure MPT
Note: If you have used PST, MSU or other PC based apps
with your phone, please exit them all, unplug your phone, power the phone OFF,
then on prior to using MPT.
THE PROCESS....
To copy my V710's contacts to my E815 I did the following...
Install and create profile for V710...
Go into the phonebook application and do a Backup. The file gets stored in
c:\docs & settings\[userid]\local settings\application data\bvrp software\motorola
phone tools\backup\[V710 profile name]\contacts.csv
Copy that CONTACTS.CSV to a SAFE Location.
Disconnect the V710... exit MPT...
Connect the E815, restart MPT and create another profile for the E815..
Go into the Phonebook application, you must first do a backup before you can
restore... So do a backup...
Copy the previously made V710's contacts.csv to c:\docs & settings\[userid]\local
settings\application data\bvrp software\motorola phone tools\backup\[E815
profile name]\contacts.csv.. YES you are going to OVERWRITE...
Use the RESTORE option in MPT's phonebook application.
Fix any picture ID's and Ringer ID's as needed.
NOTE: if you try to edit a contact, but it "kicks" you right back out to
the contacts list or main menu, its because your contact is assigned a "ringer
id" index number which does not exist on your phone. If this
happens, you'll need to delete your contact. Alternately you can EDIT the
CONTACTS.CSV file, and change all the RINGER ID's to 255 before loading onto
your phone... see the below field mappings...
CONTACTS.CSV Layout...
if anyone wants to MANUALLY EDIT Mpt's CONTACTS.CSV file... Here is what I
came up with... It is based on the phone book backup from my V710
and E815...
For...
CATEGORY;1;General;255;0
CATEGORY;2;Business;255;0
PHONE;1;Name;1112223333;2;0;255;0;1;1;255;255;0;VERSION2;;;;;;;;
as follows... (each place above, is a new line below...)
Category... signifies/defines the categories in the phone.
PHONE... signifies this line contains phone info...
1 = Quick dial location
Name = Person's name
1112223333 = Phone Number
2 = Home/mobile/fax/etc...
I know 0 = Work, 1=Home, 3 = Mobile and 4 = Fax as
those are ones I use... I Don't use "main" and "pager" but I assume they fall as
2 = main, 5 = pager
0 = Unknown
255 = Ringer ID.. where 255 = NONE.
This number represents mapping number or
index number of the ringer in the phone, and can/will change based on the order
you add Personal/Custom ring tones, or if you happen to delete the MyToneDB.DB
file on the phone.
0 = Unknown
1 = Unknown
1 = Category #1 as defined in header..
in this example 1=General, 2=Business...
255 = Unknown
255 = Unknown
0 = Unknown
VERSION2;;;;;;;; = All "phone" lines end with this...
