Verizon DUN restrictions and known workarounds... NOTE: there is constant debate over what violates Verizon's terms of service, and what doesn't, so use this info at your own risk!!!

Creating a Dial-up connection with your phone as a modem to a traditional dial-up ISP like AOL, At&t Worldnet, NetZero, Netscape,  gets treated like a VOICE call, and appears to be "legal."  However due to CDMA/1x/EVDO technology limits, you can NOT connect faster than 14.4kbps this way.

Verizon has two High Speed networks available...  Express Network (aka 1xRTT) speeds are up to 144kbps (burstable).  They can average between 60kbps to 90kbps, so its faster than using a traditional dial-up modem.  And BroadBand Access (aka EVDO) provides speeds up to 2Mbps (burstable) with typical speeds in the area of 400-700kbps (according to Verizon's FAQ )

V710 users have enjoyed "National Access Minutes of Use" for sometime now.  And tethering to Verizon's Express Network with a V710 has cost nothing more than as if it were a VOICE call (i.e. using your minutes), while taking advantage of the higher connection speeds...  NOTE: Most have NOT been billed for this, however there were a few reports of charges, so again, use at your own Risk!!

To "legally" tether with an EVDO phone to Verizon's High Speed Data networks (1xRTT or EVDO), you are supposed to subscribe to a $60 per month data plan from Verizon. BUT it might be better to keep that Discussion/debate on this over in -> EVDO Tethering (Discuss in this Thread Only!)

Below summarizes how to get connections to Verizon's services working... Air time charges do apply for Americas Choice calling plans, DATA Rates at $2 per MB apply for NationWide calling plans (after Nov 1, 2007)..  If you have an EVDO phone but do NOT subscribe to the $60 per month data plan, then doing the following violates Verizon's Terms of Service and can result in termination of service and/or additional fees/high bills!!  So USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

IF you DO have the $60 per month BroadBand Access (BBA) data plan, disabling EVDO or "Forcing to 1X mode" is NOT needed.

For the V710, or those who subscribe to the BBA plan...you  can make use of the info on -> Express Network for your Windows PC  or Express Network for your Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device.  without any hacks/modifications...

For the E815 with 1.17.03 firmware you must first enter/dial ##DIALUP quickly on the keypad. then setup a dial-up connection with your phone as the modem either via Bluetooth or USB Data cable... using...

see also -> Express Network for your Windows PC  or Express Network for your Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device.

Note: you might also have to force your phone to 1x Mode by disabling EVDO, (link of instructions to disable EVDO are on my HOW TO's page)  But I don't have the 1.17.03 firmware on my phone to confirm.

that's it, you're done.

For V3C with Alltel firmware on Verizon's network ##DIALUP is NOT needed!! Just setup a dial-up connection with your phone as the modem either via Bluetooth or USB Data cable.. using...

phone number: #777
user name: yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com
password: vzw
see also -> Express Network for your Windows PC  or Express Network for your Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device.

thats it, you're done. Nothing extra needed. From what I've read, there is no need to disable EVDO.

Ok, those were the easy ones...  now, for the fun...

For the Verizon Krzr K1M or Maxx Ve... apply the hack using QPST as discribed in -> http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1018585

then setup a dial-up connection with your phone as the modem either via Bluetooth or USB Data cable... using...

phone number: #777
user name: yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com
password: vzw
see also -> Express Network for your Windows PC  or Express Network for your Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device.

For the Verizon LG Chocolate (VX8500), enV (VX9900), Samsung U740 or U620... apply the hack using QPST as discribed in -> http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=938352 then setup a dial-up connection with your phone as the modem either via Bluetooth or USB Data cable... using...

phone number: #777
user name: yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com
password: vzw
see also -> Express Network for your Windows PC  or Express Network for your Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device.

For the Verizon LG Voyager (VX10000)... Either apply the hack using QPST as discribed in -> http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=938352, OR from the phone's service menu go Data -> MIP Setting - > NAI Setting -> MIP DUN NAI -> and change it to phonenumber@vzw3g.com (just get rid of the "dun.")

then setup a dial-up connection with your phone as the modem either via Bluetooth or USB Data cable... using...

phone number: #777
user name: yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com
password: vzw
see also -> Express Network for your Windows PC  or Express Network for your Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device.

For the E815 with 1.1E.00 firmware or the V3C/V3M with Verizon firmware... ##DIALUP is NOT needed!! BUT you must EITHER 1. 'hack' NVM_Factory file on the phone and use EVDO or  2. use ONLY PAP authentication while forcing your phone to 1x by disabling EVDO. (link of instructions to disable EVDO are on my HOW TO's page)

So setup a dial-up connection with your phone as the modem either via Bluetooth or USB Data cable... using...

phone number: #777
user name: yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com
password: vzw
see also -> Express Network for your Windows PC  or Express Network for your Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device.

For a Windows PC without having to apply the NVM_Factory file HACK to the phone... Go to the properties of your dial-up connection icon in windows... Security Tab. Select "Adavanced (custom settings)" and click the settings button. Under "allow these protocols" REMOVE the checks for EVERYTHING Except "Unencrypted password (PAP)" and OK your way out....  FORCE your phone to 1x mode, by disabling EVDO.. (link of instructions to disable EVDO are on my HOW TO's page)  Then you can use it.

Mac users must either find/use the SCRIPT ( sorry only link I can find at the moment -> Verizon V3c- BT DUN on Mac OSX 10.4-Working) which gives only PAP Authentication and force the phone to 1x mode, OR do the NVM_Factory file HACK to your phone... EDIT: here is the Script Courtesy of MacTavish -> Disable_CHAP_AppleSript_for_RazR_Modem_Hack_1-06.zip

PDA users you must do the NVM_Factory file hack to your phone. see also -> Express Network for your Pocket PC/Windows Mobile device.

For info on how to do the NVM_Factory file hack see  -> Removing the PAP only DUN restriction
