Motorola BitPim Info

WARNING... Improperly deleting or overwriting items on your phone can render it inoperable!!!

Using SOME features of BitPim can be considered HACKING your phone!!!  So use at your own risk!!

I CAN NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF YOU FRY YOUR PHONE AS A RESULT OF USING ANY OF THE INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THIS SITE!!

IF you mess up your phone by doing this, or anything on this site, do not expect Verizon, Motorola or ME to replace your phone!!  PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!  You have been warned!!

Have an LG or Samsung phone? Please see -> Using BitPim with my LG or Samsung Phones.

BitPim has come a long way for Motorola phones in the recent months..  Version 9.0x and up now natively support the V710, E815, V3C, V710M, E815M and V3CM for Phonebook, Calendar, Ring Tones, Pictures/Wall Paper, and SMS messages.   V3M and V3MM users can take advantage of the V3C/V3CM support..

NOTE: BitPim doesn't natively support the KRZR K1M, Maxx Ve, Razr2 V9M, Z6tv, Z6C, Slvr L7C, V325, V276, V265 or other CDMA Moto phones.  These phones do not appear compatible with the configurations used by the other Moto's, therefore they can only be used as "OTHER CDMA PHONE", which means phone auto-detection does not work, no GUI support, and only limited use of the file system feature.   To add ring tones and pictures to these phones, you may have to use P2KCommander due to BREW file system locks.

To reduce or eliminate "The phone is not responding while manipulating file system..." error messages while using BitPim, please be sure to make use of the newest MotoDev drivers...

NOTE: On this page, when discussing BitPim's GUI, where I say "Natively Supported Phones" it is assumed I mean the V710, E815, V3C, V3M, V710M, E815M, V3CM, and V3MM, or any other phone model listed in BitPim's Phone Type drop down box.

Notice the extra "M" on the end of some phones models??

What makes a V710M, E815M, V3CM, or V3MM, instead of being just a V710, E815, V3C or V3M?

Well, two things, but only the first is mandatory!!
First... Mandatory seem edit to the phone... Offset 6A, Bit0... "check the box" to turn this bit "on". Do this to Seem 2742 on the E815/V3C/V3M, or Seem 041A on the V710.
Second... Optionally also doing the PHONE ID String seem edit and adding the missing "M" to the phone's internal id string... But unlike MPT, having the phone's ID string does not yet cause BitPim to correctly detect your phone model, and give you the ADD option.

So, just like MPT... even if you manually configure BitPim as the "m" model of your phone, if you haven't done the 0ffset 6A/Bit0 seem edit, you can't ADD ring tones or pictures via the GUI...

NOTE: if you have a VERIZON phone and have NOT done the FIRST MANDATORY Seem Edit (Offset 6A/Bit0), you have a "non-Extra M" model of your phone... i.e. you have a V710, E815, V3C, V3M...  and not a V710m, E815m, V3Cm, or V3Mm.

I have not been able to use BitPim over bluetooth with my V710, E815 or V3C as they do not support the Bluetooth Serial Port Profile.  While using over data cable, it appears as though Bitpim tries to switch the phone into a different mode (like PST) which does not work over bluetooth. Others do concur that BitPim does NOT work with the V710/E815/V3C/V3M via bluetooth.  So you will need to use a compatible USB Data cable. see the FAQ for more info on cables.

I have used BitPim over Bluetooth with my LG and Samsung phones which DO support the Bluetooth Serial Port Profile.  See BitPim via Bluetooth for more details.

With my Verizon V710 and E815, the main things I have done with BitPim are...
1.  Changed the startup sound.  (Over wrote motorola -> shared -> audio -> ui_start_up_mono.mp3   and Motorola -> system -> ui_start_up_mono.mp_  with a 32kbit/22050Hz/Mono .MP3).
2.  Saved the .QCP files recorded by the phone's voice recorder to the PC... (they are under Filesystem -> /VoiceDB/All/Memos) And they can be played back using Qualcomm PureVoice v2.0  (see the PC Software page for details)
3. replaced Opening graphic from the Verizon animation... (Overwrote Motorola -> Shared -> Picture -> customer_opening.gif )
4. overwritten pictures taken by the phone's built in camera with images created on the PC to be used as wall papers on the phone.

Required...
1.  USB Cable (see the FAQ)
2.  Install the Motorola USB Modem drivers.
3.  BitPim installer  (free download from BitPim.ORG)

Initial Setup...

Use the downloaded EXE to install BitPim (you can just use the default options during the install process)

If you have used PST, MSU or other PC based apps with your phone, please exit them all, unplug your phone, power the phone OFF, then on, then reconnect the cable  prior to using BitPim.  BitPim will NOT work if any other apps that control the phone are running! And Your phone must be listed as "Motorola USB Modem" in device manager.

Launch BitPim (no other apps open). Allow BitPim to try and detect your phone.

Phone Auto-Detection...

BitPim can auto-detect phones which it natively supports.  This includes the V710, E815, V3C,  and V710M.   However while the E815M, V3CM, are supported, BitPim's auto-detect feature doesn't always work for them.

If your phone is not natively supported, or can not be auto-detected,  you must manually configure bitpim for your phone. To manually configure BitPim for your Phone (V3M users pick V3C, V3MM users pick V3CM).  Do this by  clicking Settings from the Edit pull down menu. Use the Phone Type Box to select your model phone, or "Other CDMA Phone." Even if you know the "com port" DO NOT manually set it. Instead, click the Browse button to the right of the Com Port. A window will pop-up and scan ports. It will have 3 "sections" listing Available Ports, Ports Not Available, and Inoperable Ports. Select your phone (Motorola USB Modem) from the listing of Available Ports and Click OK.

Using the GUI support... This section only applies with those phones natively or directly supported by BitPim. i.e.
V710, E815, V3C, V710M, E815M, V3CM...

NOTE: You must use the "GET PHONE DATA" Button to read the information from the phone... and you must use the "SEND PHONE DATA" Button to Write the changes back to the phone.

NOTE: when you click the GET or SEND Phone Data buttons, it reads/writes EVERY SINGLE DATA file/item on your phone... i.e. EVERY Ring Tone, Wall Paper, calendar item, contact, etc... So the more stuff you have on the phone, the LONGER the Get/Send process takes.

NOTE: Data is HELD in BitPim, even if you launch it with the phone disconnected....

Phone Book...

For All Natively Supported Phones Using BitPim's phonebook support, you can read the phonebook (aka contacts) from the phone to the PC, edit them, add some, and write it back to the phone.

you can export to a Comma Separated/Delimited Value text file (.CSV) which can be imported into your favorite PIM application....
Headders/fields are...

names_title,names_first,names_middle,names_last,names_full,names_nickname,

numbers_number,numbers_type,numbers_speeddial,numbers_number,numbers_type,
numbers_speeddial,numbers_number,

NOTE: I have successfully used BitPim to transfer phone books between my Moto E815 and LG Chocolate.  I have also used it to share phone book entries between two Moto V3M's.

Yo!/a/motorola/mms/1152350595.inb003E454FABFE00005C000001

the GUI shows the same kind of details...

BitPim DID read my OUTBOX (using my E815m, with seem 2742/offset6A/Bit0 "checked") And did display the message in the GUI BUT did NOT include that in the EXPORT

I have 5 messages in the inbox, 1 in the outbox, for a total of 6... I did FILE -> EXPORT -> SMS... made sure ALL (6) were choosen rather than "SELECTED (5)"... only the INBOX items appear in the EXPORT file...

In other words... BitPim does read the Phone's Outbox, and displays the message on the PC.. But for some reason, it will not EXPORT the outbox messages to a file on the PC, like it does with the INBOX messages... Bug perhaps??

Making use of the File System feature of BitPim...
For ALL PHONES...
You can make use of the File System "tab" to copy files back to your PC, over write them, and in some cases, even ADD files or folders... Right Click and get a pop-up menu with actions...

NOTE: on Some phones you may encounter "this folder has been locked by your provider." error message.  There is no known work around for this.

Use the VIEW pull down menu and select File System.  BitPim will now have a File System tab.  Click on it.   Click the + to expand the listing.

Using BitPim to COPY files from the phone to the PC (via FILE SYSTEM)...

Copy Individual Files.... Using the File System tab in Bitpim (as outlined above), navigate to the folder which holds the file...   Right click on the file.  From the pop-up choose SAVE.   From the "Save As..." dialog box, browse to the folder on the PC you want to save to, adjust the file name (if needed) and then click SAVE.

Copy Entire Folder.... Using the File System tab in Bitpim (as outlined above), navigate to the folder which holds the files...   Right click on the folder.  From the pop-up choose Backup Directory.  Bitpim will read the files in the directory one at a time and create a ZIP file.  From the "Save As..." dialog box, browse to the folder on the PC you want to save to, adjust the file name (if needed) and then click SAVE.

Copy Entire Folder Structure or "Tree".... Using the File System tab in Bitpim (as outlined above), navigate to the folder which is the top of the directory tree you wish to backup to your PC...   Right click on the folder.  From the pop-up choose Backup Entire Tree.  Bitpim will read the files in that folder and all sub folders one at a time and create a ZIP file.  From the "Save As..." dialog box, browse to the folder on the PC you want to save to, adjust the file name (if needed) and then click SAVE.

Using BitPim to add Ringtones and Pictures/WallPapers to the phone via file system tab...

File Locations...  Before we discuss how to add... its important to know the file locations for your phone...  See the FILE LOCATIONS PAGE for more information on this.

Adding Wall Papers....   To add pictures/wall papers using the File System tab, we need to take advantage of BitPim's ability to overwrite existing files.  So, using the Phone's built in Camera,  take a few pictures (this will make the files we want to overwrite).  Then using the File System Tab in Bitpim (as outlined above), navigate to the appropriate   folder.  On one of the "photos" taken by the phone's camera, right click.  From the pop-up choose OVERWRITE...   From the "Select a file" dialog box, find/select the Picture on your PC, and click OPEN.  Bitpim will write it to the phone and you will be back to the normal BitPim screen.   You can then use the Phone's menu to rename the picture as needed.

Adding RingTones.... (note: Works for the V710, however E815/V3C/V3M users might not be able to do this, But since the GUI works, use it instead!!!  Sorry, this does NOT work for Krzr K1M, and may not work for the Maxx Ve)   Connect to your phone with BitPim.   Using the file system tab (as outlined above) Navigate to the appropriate  folder.  Right click on AUDIO.. from the pop-up, select NEW FILE...  From the "Select a file" dialog box, find/select the Audio File on your PC, and click OPEN.  Bitpim will write it to the phone and you will be back to the normal BitPim screen.  Repeat as necessary to add additional ring tones one at a time.  Motorola users: When finished adding, navigate to  the ROOT  (i.e. / )  and find the MyToneDB.db file.  Right click, from the pop-up choose DELETE.   Power the phone OFF, wait a few seconds.  Turn the phone back on...  The phone should re-generate the MyToneDB.DB file, and you should be able to see/use your ring tones.  NOTE: deleting the MyToneDB.DB will re-index all ringtones, as such, your custom choices for Ring Styles or Ringer ID's WILL CHANGE!!

Adding files to the Transflash.... (note: works for only the V710/E815/V3M as the V3C doesn't have a TF slot) If you have a Transflash card inserted into your phone, in BitPim it will show up as /mmc1.   This is VERY SLOW, so its recommended to use a Memory Card Reader instead.

Again, See the FILE LOCATIONS PAGE for more information on where to place the files...

To add files,  Right click on the folder name (Pictures  or Audio)... from the pop-up, select NEW FILE...  From the "Select a file" dialog box, find/select the file on your PC, and click OPEN.  Bitpim will write it to the phone/TF card and you will be back to the normal BitPim screen.  Repeat as necessary to add additional files one at a time.

I have NOT done the following so use at your own risk!!!...  But this has been reported by others to work using BitPim...

Adding Movies/Videos to the phone's memory....   Movies/videos should be placed in the appropriate folder listed above.  However, to get them to show on the phone, you might have to use the same kind of "trick" like I outlined for pictures... (i.e. make a short video using your phone's built in camera... then use bitpim to overwrite with video from your PC)

REMOVING Factory Ringtones and Pictures from Motorola V710, E815, V3C and V3M  phones...   USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

The pre-loaded ringtones on Motorola V710/E815/V3C/V3M are in two places... most are under /Rom_Alert and a few are under the folder listed above. Once removed, delete the /MyToneDB.DB file and restart the phone.  NOTE: deleting the MyToneDB.DB will re-index all ringtones, as such, your custom choices for Ring Styles or Ringer ID's WILL CHANGE!!

Pictures and EMS graphics on some MOTO phones are located under /motorola/shared/picture... After you delete the pictures, you may be left with "broken links" for those pictures you delete. When powering the phone off/on doesn't fix it,  according to psysfdd  doing a Master Reset AND Master clear will resolve that.  Note: Master Reset/Master Clear will erase your contacts and reset all of the phones menu options/settings back to their "defaults."  It will not un-do Seem Edits, or erase any existing pictures or ring tones.

Discuss this in -> BitPim v9.04... Here's what it can do...
