Using the US Cellular Monster firmware on your Verizon V9M Phone.....

FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

Preface:  It tooks us a while to get here. Things have been inconsistent, not worked the way we expected them to, didn't work when we thought it should, worked when everything we know tells us it shouldn't. There are still things that, while they are working, we don't have a complete understanding of.

Because of the inconsistencies... Please be sure to read EVERY WORD, follow every step EXACTLY, and use the Exact software and flash versions listed in this guide. Do NOT SKIM, DO NOT ASSUME, Do NOT differ from the process here, or you will end up with unexpected results.

This guide was written in the specific sequence we used to get things working, so there are times you are opening/closing and switching back and forth between various tools. In other words, we did not go through and optimize this process for "speed" or "efficiency"... but rather wrote up a process that we know works repeatedly.

Luckily there is a leaked Verizon V9M Monster flash, so you can always revert to STOCK... however... please understand that some have experienced the problem of flashing from Verizon to USC to Verizon and being unable to go to USC again.

This guide is not written for noobies... Its meant for those who have already done some hacking/flashing with their phones!!

This guide is a colaborative effort between KBMAN and myself on a phone supplied by wnrussell. And, without the 275A edit done in section 3g found by Goldmembr, this guide would not work properly for EVDO data!!

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE GUIDE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT THIS!!!!

THIS DOES VOID YOUR WARRANTY!! And Verizon will NOT support you with the US Cellular firmware on your phone!

"...I can't stress this enough, you need to read, read, read and then read some more and pay absolute attention to the details until you begin to understand what you are trying to do.

If you dive into this without a clue you should well expect to crawl out without a phone!

It's that simple, really. This is not easy stuff to comprehend or actually do and there is really no way to make it any less complicated than we already have.

Sorry, but Mark and myself have said this a thousand times in a thousand different ways and still people don't listen, start hacking their phone and come screaming back to the board asking the same questions that have been answered over and over and we get to the point where we just throw up our hands and walk away.

Sad but only too true..." - KBMAN...

Finally, xtremesteel made a good summary post I suggest you read -> Post # 759

Discuss this guide in -> GUIDE: Using the US Cellular V9M firmware on your Verizon V9M and VZW network...

Required... (please be sure to follow the LINKS where provided to properly install/configure these apps)

1.  Micro-USB Cable or Mini-B to Micro USB adapter (see the FAQ or the top of the V9M page)
2.  Install/Configure Motorola Software Update (which will also install the correct USB Drivers)
3.  Install and configure Rsd CDMA General v4.9.8* NOTE: IE7 installed on your computer may cause problems with RSD CDMA General!!!
4.  Install P2KSeem for V710. (To install P2KSeem for V710.. Just unzip all the files in the archive you downloaded to a folder. It does not need to be "installed." There is no "setup" program.)
5.  RSDLite v4.1*
6.  Install and configure QPST v2.7 Build 231* (or later) along with its requirements
7.  Install/Configure P2K Commander v4.9.D along with its requirements
8. RadioComm v11.2.0*
9. RadioComm v11.2.0 requires MS .Net Framework v2.  (you can use windowsupdate.microsoft.com to download)
10. Addition -> MotoSuperTrubka - MoST can be used as a seem editor, rather than the P2KCommander/P2KSeem Combo, or RadioComm

*sorry, no warez links here. If you need these apps, its up to you to acquire them!

NOTE: there have been mixed resutls running some of these tools under Windows VISTA... I am not running Vista, so I can not provide guideance.

Note: double click on any picture to see the full screen shot

The Process...

NOTE: It is assumed at this point that you have taken the time to properly install/configure the apps using the links as listed in the REQUIRED section. The work in this guide depends on that!!

Prior to starting this process your phone must be running the Verizon Firmware, be actived on your account and you had to have done a *228 opt 1, and *228 opt 2 on it (restart the phone after EACH *228). The phone and all of its features must be completely working on the VERIZON Firmware!!  Failure to be in this state prior to starting will mean FAILURE in the end. After the V9M phone you wish to convert is fully working using the Verizon firmware on your account... Activate a different phone on your account while flashing and fixing your V9M phone...

Example... We used VZW's My Account -> Activate phone, to switch to the V9M.. did *228 opt 1 & Opt 2, restarted the phone, tested it worked, then used My Accont -> Activate, to switch back to an E815 while we then flashed and worked with the V9M... When all the fixes were applied and done... we switched back to the V9M being active on my account and tried it out...

We have NOT tested this process any other way... i.e. if you have only one phone and therefore can not deactivate the V9M from your account while you proceed... I can not suggest another reliable way to go about this process, and your results WILL vary!!

1. Backup the phone...

OPTIONAL:

backup the file system... (Use BitPim to capture tree to zip file. Uncompress ZIP on PC. go folder by folder comparing PC's copy to phone's file system view in bitpim, make note of missing files/folders. Use P2KCommander and QPST to get the rest.) You many not be able to backup All files/folders this way.   This is not actually needed, but some like to do it, "just in case"....)If you made these optional backups... Please unplug, then restart the phone.

The following are MANDATORY:
You must now backup the settings, config files, etc... which WILL BE NEEDED to restore later...  NOTE: These files are essential to restoring your phone to a working state!  Do not proceed to flashing if you are unable to back up ANY ONE of these items!

1.1 Use Qualcomm QPST to backup service programming.....  Unplug your phone from the PC, power it off, then back on, and re-connect it to the PC.  Use the QPST Configuration program, make sure your phone is displayed/available... Select the port with your phone, then use the Start Client pull down, select Service Programming.     At the phone selection screen, your phone should be listed and highlighted, click OK.  Click the READ FROM PHONE button.  On the "Enter Service Programming Code" screen, enter 000000 (or your phones SPC), and click OK.   When the read is complete, and you see values filled in, click the SAVE TO FILE button.   The file name box will automatically be filled in as  your phone's ESN number  followed by  _SP... (example:  1A3333Ad_SP) click the Save button.   Click on the Connection pull down in QPST Service Programming, and click EXIT.   Exit the QPST Configuration program.  Unplug the phone, power it off, then back on.

1.2 Use RADIOCOMM to backup seems....
Download this table -> V9M_MonsterSeems-1b.NVM.  (Right Click -> Save Target As...  and make sure it doesn't end up getting a .TXT appended to it)
Unplug your phone from the PC, power it off, then back on, and re-connect it to the PC.
Start RadioComm.
If prompted about the Moto Driver Installation setup, click CANCEL. i.e. do NOT run the Moto Driver Installation...
Inside RadioComm, use the Main pulldown menu. Select MA -> CDMA1X -> 6x50 Chipset Base
Use the Settings pull down menu. Select USB -> M-Link USB Driver.
In the Main RadioComm window, click on the P2K 1 tab. The PC should "beep", and you should see the Radio Detection change from a blue ciricle to a Green circle.

1.3 Use RSD CDMA General to backup
everything under provisioning.. except PTT. Phone Book is optional.
NOTE: Not all of the RSD CDMA GEN backups will be used for this process, but they are good to have as backups "just in case..."

Do Not connect the phone.

Launch RSD CDMA General. The messaging saying "Failed to Parse Matrix file..." is normal.

Connect the phone.

The message in RED saying "If you are upgrading your software or doing a swap operation, this phone is not supported. You may however continue using the phone provisioning menu." along with "Please disconnect this phone." This is also NORMAL.

Once you see that RED message, your phone information should be displayed in the upper right serction, and you are ready to being.

To get to Phone Provisioning... click on the ICON along the left, not the words.. the ICON.

Along with just links for ESN/MEID to MDN Mapping, Multiple Loading and Print PIM.

Put a check in the box of each the setting you wish to read from the phone (all except Phone Book and Date Book)... and click the Read Phone button. RSD should start reading those selected settings from the phone.

When the read is complete, you need to save EACH of those settings to file individually. From the list along the left, click the Item Name. Those settings will be displayed in RSD's main frame, then using the Save button. From the "Save As..." dialog box, browse to the folder on the PC you want to save to, adjust the file name (if needed) and then click SAVE. Only the settings being displayed will be saved, so you need to repeat this, saving each item one at a time from there.

IMPORTANT
: When saving the MMS settings... Keep an eye on the File Extension... if its .VMS you WILL have problems later... so STOP RIGHT NOW!!! If the file extension is .MMS you are ok to proceed.

NOTE: when viewing the CDMA NAM settings, please make note of MIN and MDN (NAM1 colum.. MIN = line 2 + line 1, and MDN = Line 5) -> Example screen shot

NOTE: when viewing the FEATURES settings, please make note of the System Select Preference Verizon Only option as this is a setting you may want to confirm later...

When all have been saved, unplug the phone, power it off, then back on.

3c. Restore the RSD CDMA General Backups...
NOTE: You are NOT writing/restoring ALL of the RSD backups... only certain ones will be used. Restore ONLY THOSE LISTED!!! Use RSDGen to write ONLY the following ONE AT A TIME.... NOTE: Please use YOUR Backups from Step 1.3 above, the files I have linked here should only be used as a last resort!!!!

BREW,
ERI,
MMS Setting (NOTE: Prior to writing, please change the "Album Upload Address" field to 9995551212@pix.vtext.com, where 9995551212 = your 10digit phone number, BEFORE your write to phone),

-----------------------------------------------------

Restart phone.

Exit any open applications on your PC while phone is restarting...

Because P2KCommander gives no feed back upon writing a seem to the phone, we need to verify our seem was written...
Do this by checking the phone's menus... Are Automatic A and Automatic B choices under Menu -> Settings -> Network options -> Set Mode?
no = seem didn't write try again...
Yes = seem wrote... you may proceed :)

3e. Re-write the ERI with RSD Gen

Due to the setting of 2742 offset 42, bit 5, the ERI file did not get written properly before.

So use the steps outlined in section 3c and use RSD CDMA General to again open your ERI backup and write to the phone.

Unplug your phone from the PC, power it off, then back on, and re-connect it to the PC.

3f. Use RADIOCOMM to restore your seems....

Use the Features pull down menu. Select NV/Seem.
In the TABLE box, click the OPEN button. Browse to the ESN.NVM file that was created in the backup steps (example: A123455.NVM) , select it, and click OK.
In the Action box, click the WRITE button.
When the WRITE has completed...
Close the seem window using the X in its upper right, but Do NOT completely exit out of RadioComm yet.

3g. Edit seem 275a to fix using First M.IP via RadioComm Per Goldmembr (275A, offset f4, set HEX to 04, i.e check only bit2)

NOTE: you can NOT use P2KCommander/P2KSeem to perform this edit.

On the P2K1 tab, in the lower left, look for the STELEM/RDELEM section.

Enter the following values....
(1)Element ID: 275A
(2)Record # 1
(3)Offset 0000
(4)Length F5

(5)click the RDELEM button.

In the Data: (hex only) field... use the arrow and scroll all the way to the right.

change the last character from 2 to 4

BEFORE ->

AFTER ->

click the STELEM button.

4.0. Fix Potential MMS problem using RadioComm... (275a, offset 162, set HEX to 2... i.e. check only bit1)

NOTE: this section is only needed IF you run into this specific problem!!! If you do not run into this specific issue, then skip to the next section.

Some users will find their MDN and MIN do not match. This could cause potential problems sending/receiving MMS messages. There is an offset/bit combo in the 275A seem which controls this. When the value is set as 2 the MIN is used, but when this value is set as 0 the MDN is used. This section outlines changing it...

NOTE: if your MDN and MIN are the same, you can still make this edit without impacting anything.

NOTE: you can NOT use P2KCommander/P2KSeem to perform this edit.

On the P2K1 tab, in the lower left, look for the STELEM/RDELEM section.

NOTE: if you did the 275A edit in step 3g above, then unlike these next screen shots, your RDELEM button may still be green... This is normal.

Enter the following values....
(1)Element ID: 275A
(2)Record # 1
(3)Offset 0000
(4)Length 163

(5)click the RDELEM button.

In the Data: (hex only) field... use the arrow and scroll all the way to the right.

change the last character from 0 (the default) to 2

Before ->

After ->

click the STELEM button.

4.1 Fix Seem 275B...

If you do a Master Reset, the 275A seem will get re-written with the PRE-EDITED values. To prevent this, follow sections 3g and 4.0 to make the same edits you did on the 275A seem to the 275B seem as well.

5.0 Restart the phone and Exit Radiocomm...

In the upper center of the RadioComm window, use the RESTART Phone button.

Once the phone beings to restart, exit Radiocomm

Unplug the phone, power it off, then back on.

-----------------

6.0. write edited Browser file using RSD CDMA General...

When using the default Verizon config files, you need to create a new Web Session on your phone to handle the MMS/PIX Messaging, you may also need to edit the USER ID field of the default VZW web session.

Use the steps outlined in section 3c to open the Browser settings file (xxxx.RTB) that you backed up in step 1.3.

In the Proxy 1 area, change the User ID from %m or MIN to 9995551212, where 9995551212 is your Phone Number. Leave the other fields untouched. Note: Some have needed to use their 10digit MDN or 10digit MIN instead, as written down earlier in section 1.

Click -> SAMPLE SCREEN SHOT (Proxy 1)

Scroll down to the Proxy 2 area.

Configure the fields as follows...

NOTE: Be Very careful to only click on these boxes, in this order, entering this info. Failure to do so, can end up with a Pop-up from RSD CDMA Gen saying 4 or 5 digits are required!! If you get stuck in that look, either 1. Close RSD CDMA Gen and start this step over... or 2. put in anything for the PORT and E2E port, then use the phone's menu to edit the web session and adjust the ports later.

Proxy Name: VZW_MMS
User ID: 9995551212          (where 9995551212 is your 10 digit phone number)
Password: vzw
Homepage: http://homepage

Under the Primary section...
Gateway: mms.vtext.com
E2E Port: 9201
Port: 80
Leave the other fields untouched.

Click -> SAMPLE SCREEN SHOT (Proxy 2)

If you have a Personal "free" WAP proxy, you may scroll down to the Proxy 3 area, and enter the appropriate fields to configure that web session now.

When you have finished, use the Write Phone button.

When you see "Provisioning has successfully written to the phone" in the lower window, RSD should have caused your phone to restart.

Exit RSD CDMA General.

Disconnect the phone from the PC.

6.1 Configuring Message Options to use the VZW_MMS web session.

On the phone...   Go Menu -> Messaging -> press Options soft key.
From the list, select Setup -> Message Setup -> MMS Message Setup.
Highlight Server Info, and press the Change soft key.
On the Current Server screen, press the Option soft key.
Select EDIT.
Verify the Server Name and Web Session Name match VZW values....    Service Name = VZW, Server Name = http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms,  Web Session = VZW_MMS.

(The following, copied directly from the Alltel V3C Wiki, may already be done due to the use of RSD CDMA General/QPST/RadioComm, but Please verify these are set properly..)
Now go to Main Menu / Settings / Security / Data Connections/ password is 000000/ 1xRTT Data. Verify that the following are set... If they are not, then change them....

User Name : XXXXXXXXXX@vzw3g.com (XXX=your TN)

Note: After you hit OK the phone might report… “Notify xxxxx of change” just disregard !

Password : vzw

hit done

---------------

Activate phone your on account

Do a *228 opt 1

restart phone. (i.e. power off/on).

Lastly, edit the tethered NAI field as outlined in -> http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1018585
Note: you will need to re-edit the tethered NAI field after every *228.

restart phone...

Enjoy the Moto UI !!!!!

NEED TO ADD to the guide...

Addition -> MotoSuperTrubka - MoST can be used as a seem editor, rather than the P2KCommander/P2KSeem Combo, or RadioComm..

Fix for END key to exit Get-It-Now... (rather than having to use the CLR button to back out one step at a time)
Seem edit to.. Seem: 2994, Record 1, Bytes(h) 0000

Change the Hex value to 00 (or all bits UNCHECKED) = 9 Icon
Change the Hex Value to 01 (or bit 0 checked, rest unchecked) = 12 Icon
(do the same edit to 275b, so it survives a Master reset/clear)

Not sure where to add this.... Per Goldmember....

You guys on the USC firmware can set that last stubborn setting in QPST Service Programing "PPP Config" Tab under "AN" sub tab that stays "User ID: yourESN@usc.net" Well use Moto Super Trubka to fix that setting the seem is below

Seem 04aa Record 0001
Change the first offset 0000 on the hex side to "14" then starting at offset 0001 on the text side type out "yourphone#@vzw3g.com" then save to phone. After you restart you can read your QPST Service Programing again to see that it stuck now.

Customization suggestions...

SKINS... if you wish to make use of additional skins see -> How to *** new Skins to Motorola v9m (USCC FLASH)

Custom 9 icon MMA_UCP supplied by Goldmembr... This adds additional functions/icon to the phone's main menu.

mma_ucp-dcp.rar Per Goldmembr "Use this one it is a fully funtional mma_ucp and mma_dcp incl. icons with Brew label for GetItNow, WebAccess with Browser and WebSessions submenu, Music Player and USB Settings. It's also 9 main menu icons instead of 12. I like it better because it gets rid of the extra Bluetooth, Video Camera and Camera in the main menu. Replace both mma files so when and if you do a Master Reset or Master clear you wont have it going back to the default."

NOTE: when adding the icons to the file system, please use P2KCommander. If you use BitPim or QPST EFS Explorer, the icons will not be displayed on the phone, instead you will have a blank space.

Custom uscappmgr.bar supplied by sabbotage... Since USC calls it Easyedge, this replaces that with GetItNow.

uscappmgr.rar per sabbotage "I updated my uscappmgr.bar file that I posted above. Along with replacing easyedge with GetItNow, I got a resource editor and replaced the easyedge image at the beginning of the catalog with a get it now image. Its working great!
